What is a 100Gbps QSFP28 Bi-Directional Transceiver?

2025-07-31

A 100Gbps QSFP28 Bi-Directional (BiDi) Transceiver is a high-speed optical module used for transmitting and receiving data at 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) over a single pair of multimode fibers (MMF), instead of the traditional 8 fibers required for 100G Ethernet using parallel optics.

Key Technical Features:

  • Form Factor: QSFP28 (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28)
  • Data Rate: 100 Gbps (typically 4x25 Gbps lanes)
  • Interface: Duplex LC (instead of MPO)
  • Fiber Type: Multimode fiber (OM3/OM4/OM5)
  • Transmission Distance: Typically up to 100 meters (OM4), 70 meters (OM3)
  • Bi-Directional: Uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) to send and receive data over the same two fibers.

Benefits:

  • Fiber Reuse: Enables 100G on existing duplex fiber links without rewiring.
  • Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for new cabling or expensive parallel optics.
  • Space Saving: Uses LC connectors instead of bulkier MPO connectors.
  • Simple Upgrade Path: Ideal for data centers upgrading from 10G or 40G to 100G.

DESCRIPTIONS
The 100G QSFP28 ER1 BIDI is designed for 40km optical communication applications.
It is intended for the service with single mode fiber in 100Gb/s high speed data communications.
The optical signals are multiplexed to a single-mode fiber through commercial standard LC connector.
